Alberto Gonzales' testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee was patently false, by his own admission

Glenn Greenwald has the details. Flashing back to the testimony of the oil executives last Fall, its crystal clear now why the Republicans on the committe choose to keep their controversial witnesses from testifying under oath... especially when the subject in question is one that is sensitive to the political futures of certain Republicans. Every single Republican on the Judiciary Committee is a national disgrace: Orrin Hatch, Charles Grassley, Jon Kyl, Mike DeWine, Jeff Sessions, Lindsey Graham, John Cornyn, Sam Brownback, Tom Coburn and especially Chairman Arlen Specter... this means you. Alberto sent this letter (.pdf) to the committee to 'clarify' this testimony, which has now been proven to contain multiple instances of purposefully and patently false testimony. For Gonzales, the bad news is you don't have to be sworn in to commit perjury, which is precisely what he did. In other words, Gonzales went to this committee knowing he was going to lie, the Republicans on the committee (knowing that his defense would contain these lies) voted to NOT put the Attorney General under oath, and yesterday Gonzales' "clarifications" proved it.
